Building the Fireplace

Portaging the Canoe - A Rite of Passage - Algonquin Provincial Park

On the Campfire Cooking page, I talked about the importance of building a proper fireplace for cooking on. Taking 15 minutes or so to rearrange that jumble of rocks that you are likely to find when you get to the site can make cooking on the fire a whole lot more fun. Not only will you be able to level out the grill and set it up so you aren't worrying about *when* something is going to tumble into the fire, you will also end up with a fireplace that is a lot more efficient and easier to manage. Here is a video that I put together from a trip last spring that walks through building a good cooking fireplace.
