What Worked Well

You know, Rick has been running this trip for so long, that it goes like clockwork. Some of the things that I think make it turn out well year after year include:

  1. Lots of tarps. Being able to put up a wind shelter makes a big difference on a cold wet blustery day, which you usually get a lot of in early May.
  2. The food. We don't pack light on this trip and it shows - in my waistline by the time we head home! It's a luxury that is well worth it when we only portage the gear in over the one short portage from Rock to Pen and then set up the base camp for the week. At the same time, you need the extra calories if it is cold out. Feel free to pull an ironman routine in the middle of summer, but if you're camping for a week in early May don't scrimp on the food.
  3. The rod holders. I have to give credit where credit is due and these are a pattern that I copied from Rick. I know you can just tuck the end of the rod under a leg, but even if you are sitting up instead of kneeling, that gets uncomfortable after a while and it makes it hard to switch the side you are paddling on. I have tried to think up a simpler pattern for these but I have yet to find one that uses fewer parts.
